Workshop 1: Building Learner-Centered State CTE Recruitment Communications

Building effective recruitment and program communications is about more than catchy phrases and bright colors. Effective state recruitment structures must actively engage learners and families in all stages of recruitment communications to fully understand and subsequently help learners navigate a recruitment journey that meets their needs. In this interactive session, participants will hear from state and local leaders highlighting how engaging learners in recruitment communications and systems has challenged their thinking and made a positive impact. Participants will also get a first look at a communications assessment and planning tool from Advance CTE inspired by lessons learned from 4 years of communications technical assistance. 
Learning objectives:
  • Gain an understanding of the impact and importance of direct engagement with learners and focus populations to improve the efficacy of recruitment communications and efforts with the goal of reducing gaps in CTE enrollment and participation.
  • Learn best practices for developing systems and routines to include learner and family input and voice in recruitment communications from state and local leaders who participated in the Building Effective State CTE Recruitment Systems and Communication cohort.
  • Understand how to evaluate current practices, take routines to the next level, and get started using a new Advance CTE tool to develop learner-centered recruitment and program communications and systems.

Workshop 3: Diversifying the CTE Workforce

This session will offer a brief overview of strategies to identify, recruit, and hire CTE teachers, including building awareness of CTE teaching as a profession and recruiting underrepresented populations to diversify the CTE educator pipeline and support underserved learners. Participants will examine data on the current CTE workforce and identify gaps and areas of focus for recruitment, and they will receive an action planning tool to help identify root causes and action steps. Throughout the session, successful strategies for promoting CTE as a career choice, reaching diverse audiences, and creating inclusive preparation, licensure, and hiring processes will be highlighted, and specific program examples will be made available.

Since their creation in 2021, Advance CTE has utilized Brave Dialogues and Opportunity Gap Analysis resources to help state CTE leaders enhance their team's ability to lead learner-centered and data-informed discussions with state and local practitioners. Ideal for beginner to intermediate-level participants, attendees will become familiar with the components of both tools and how to maximize their application through self-facilitation or tailored technical assistance opportunities. State leaders from Colorado will also share their journey using both tools to conduct system-level assessments and strategic planning. Join us for this workshop and learn how to support facilitating brave and data-informed conversations to improve learner access to high-demand, high-wage CTE fields.
Learning objectives:
  • Develop an understanding of one's identity, values, assumptions, and biases, and recognize their potential impact on others.
  • Gain an introduction to the awareness and knowledge components of the Brave Dialogues curriculum and framework, focusing on critical self-reflection and effective policy and practice.
  • Learn about the opportunity gap analysis tools and processes that your state can utilize to inform data-driven decision-making, aimed at increasing participation of Perkins V special populations and sub-groups in non-traditional fields.
  • Explore the latest program-specific cohorts of the Opportunity Gap Analysis, such as Work-Based Learning (WBL), Apprenticeship, and Credentials of Value.
  • Elevate stories and outcomes from state(s) that have previously participated in both Brave Dialogues and Opportunity Gap Analysis.
